The Week Ahead...

.
FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL

 Word to the Wise:
“Ask yourself: Have you been kind today? Make kindness your daily modus operandi and change your world.”
- Annie Lennow, Scottish recording artist.

This term’s Theme: Let Courtesy Shine Through: Is a great challenge and reminder to our students that the act of caring for and respect of others is an age old habit that will never become clichéd in its use. We talk about a changing world and the onslaught of technology on our psyche, but we need not be afraid of changes if we remain grounded in good habits and courteous behavior. There are still excellent role models around whose values remind us that the world is still a good place. Let us encourage our students to use words like: “thank you”, “please”, “good morning”, “May I please borrow…?” Encourage them to see the good in others and not be afraid to acknowledge this. Let us move back to good home-spun habits of courtesy and respect for all.

Welcome back to everyone. We are already in the third week of the term and I am sure all expectations have been stated and our students well on their way to a successful Term. I continue to ask your support in helping us set manageable goals for the students and ensure that they follow through on them. In addition, I seek your support in believing that what we do in the school is always in the interest of your children. Sometimes when changes occur, things may seem unusual for a while, but as one relaxes with this, one realizes that it was well worth the effort.

Canteen

As you are aware, we now have quite a good canteen on site. Breakfast is being sold in the mornings and this has been an answer to my wish ever since the beginning of my tenure here. I have always believed that a healthy start to a child’s morning, paves the way for good classroom response. In addition to Breakfast, there are hot meals from a balanced menu. Judging from the response, the canteen will be here for a long time. Students are making healthy choices too and this is encouraging as they seek to consume vegetables or fruits with their meals. In the meantime, based on the location of the canteen, we ask that parents be cautious when driving through the gates for drop off and/or pick- ups.

Late Arrival at School

The term is a short one, and we encourage you to get your children to school on time. We are putting a policy in place for the chronically late student whose lateness is a disruption to a class that has already begun and the teacher having to stop his/her teaching to wait until that child is settled. It is not fair to parents who have made arrangements to be at school on time only to have their children’s learning disrupted by others. Once a student has arrived at school after 8.15 a.m., he/she must report to the Principal’s office with a parent/driver who will sign in the student. A late slip will be issued to the student who will present this to the teacher upon arrival in the classroom. When students are late for a class already in progress, they will wait in the office until that period is over before they are admitted into the classroom. Action will be taken for consistent lateness (three times per week) upon which a warning will go home to parents. If lateness continues, a consequence will be issued, through a written letter to parents.

Games’ Uniform

The regulation Games’ Uniform is no longer available as the manufacturer has gone out of business. We are in the process of investigating a new supplier and hopefully we will have a new regulation Games’ Uniform in place from September 2011. In the interim, students may wear for Games:

- The complete regulation Games’ Uniform, OR

- House T-Shirt and regulation Games’ Shorts or plain, dark coloured P.E. Shorts (not “Jams”), OR

- Plain, white T-Shirt and regulation Games’ Shorts, or plain, dark coloured P.E. Shorts (not “Jams”).

Yours in Education,

D. H. Strickland-Nurse (Mrs.)
Principal
